The Story
When no door opened, they built one.
Founded in Singapore in 2024, Mokumoku takes its name from a Japanese word for the silence of someone wholly absorbed in their work. For this young company, the name is more than an aesthetic choice. It is a portrait of one of its founders.
He holds a degree in biotechnology and a mind well suited to the lab: patient, exacting, fluent in the slow science of fermentation and plant extraction. He also lives with selective mutism, a condition in which speech can become impossible in certain settings, however clear the thoughts behind it. In a job market that so often rewards the confident interview and the quick reply, his abilities went unseen.
His sister, a specialist in cosmetic science, saw what employers had missed. Rather than wait for the world to make room for him, the two decided to make room for themselves.
